Words are both my friend and enemy.
When I write poems, blogs, or essays; words come easily and "spell out" exactly how I feel. I love words so much that I do word puzzles and am an avid lover of Scrabble.
However, when I go to speak, words step on my tongue and push themselves out with great difficulty. I stutter and stammer and struggle to say what my head so desperately wants to convey.
Words are usually accompanied by two friends; tone and body language. How you say it and what you look like saying it are very important and can give you more information. Funny thing is, when you are reading this, words go unaccompanied, and you are left to determine my tone and how I look when I'm writing this.
How does my voice sound in your head, am I writing this from a laptop in my pjs or while I'm talking on the phone? You don't know and it leaves your imagination to finish the puzzle.
Isn't it funny that this is the most popular way of communicating in this culture? Texting, messaging, and facebooking have taken place of face to face conversation or even talking on the phone.
I'm not saying that that is necessarily good or bad; I just find it fascinating that we've eliminated what would be considered two key factors of communication. Of course I still enjoy talking to someone face-to-face rather than texting, and I'm sure many others would agree. After all, a sympathetic look or a caring tone has a difficult time traveling over MSN.
Words are fascinating and at times difficult to comprehend, but they are necessary for communicating with everyone. It's a pretty cool way that God created us to function to communicate when you really think about it. Noises to describe people, places, things, and feelings; symbols to interpret these noises onto paper; and even certain ways to say or act when you make these noises!
I could write more about this topic because I am really fascinated by the power and beauty of words, but I am going to leave it at this and maybe I'll pick it up again.
